Last year, I decided to launch this blog with our revamped website. There was an idea in my head, but no clear-cut plan, vision, or true direction – I was just itching to get it out there on the internet. As the semester went on, that initial momentum began to dwindle until posts were put on the backburner, and it became easier to ignore it. Honestly, I was ready to put the blog aside for a while until I heard some members talking about it during our end-of-year banquet.
Since then, some genius thought it would be a good idea to put a shy introvert in charge of the entire Marketing division. And so, I did what any introvert would when faced with a daunting task. I sat quietly in my room to think. I did a lot of reflecting about this club: the good, the bad, and the yet to be discovered. Over time, I found myself coming back to the question of why those of us on Leadership put so much time and effort into this club?
At the end of the day, it’s always been about the community we’ve built together – the wonderful, welcoming group of people that come out to our events, give each other advice and feedback in the Facebook group, and just make it so damn fun to go shoot some compositional bangers. There’s always that special moment when people geek out together over an astronomically overpriced piece of glass or pull over on the side of the highway to scramble over rocks in hopes of archiving that special moment surrounded by friends. I hope to spread this special bond that we call Photo Club, and that’s when I realized where the blog could fit into all of this.
Between procrastinating every assignment and holding the shambles of your social life together, coming out to events is hard. I get it. Even I miss events because I simply can’t find the time. But, trying to make something of your college experience shouldn’t limit your ability to enjoy, participate, and grow in our community. These blogs should serve as a catalog of our experiences related to photography; a place where people can express their ideas and thoughts on all things photography in a semi-formal and structured manner.
In the beginning, a lot of these pieces will be written by members of Leadership. We don’t claim to know everything there is to know about photography, but that’s not the point. We all just have a passion that we want to share, and I hope these articles can become the perfect medium for anyone to share what’s brewing in their creative minds. So, here’s to a year of experimentation, late nights, and crunching deadlines to piece together some ramblings for you. After all, without you, all this time and effort means nothing. Our first post this year can be found here.
Thank you for your support, cheers, and happy reading!
